Started only in 2006, our 1/3-acre Mediterranean Subtropical Garden is already brimming with colorful flowers and foliage. Click here to see photos of it in January 2006. Our summers are dry here, and our winters are frost-free. Because of our unique climate, we can grow an astounding number of plants in Southern California, from temperate to tropical and desert to jungle! Our newest garden features a very diverse array of choice plants, including many subtropicals, including hibiscus, cannas, brugmansias, and alstroemerias, but also some fine Mediterranean-climate plants such as lavenders, leucodendrons, and restios. They all live together just fine here in one garden with just weekly irrigation! The garden is dominated by a large Hybrid Coral Tree (Erythrina x bidwillii), three Brazilian Fern Trees (Schizolobium parahyba), a fine specimen of the Strawberry Snowball Tree (Dombeya cacuminum), and a Yellow African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata 'Aurea'). Our new garden is also home some of our most popular perennials, including our 200 most-favorite varieties of reblooming daylilies (saved from the days when we grew over 2000 varieties), over 50 varieties of reblooming bearded iris, and our newest varieties of salvias and other great plants. There's such a great diversity of plants in this new garden, you'll love getting ideas for what you can do in your garden! It's a real testament to the tremendous horticultural opportunities in our fantastically-mild Southern California climate! These photos were taken in Spring, 2008 by our neighbor, Bob Wiegand. Come enjoy this garden, you'll be inspired.
